There are times when you might want to change your name and logically times when you would want your computer to change its’ name. There are all sorts of places on the internet protected by firewalls that act as guest lists. It’s awful helpful to have a name that is on that list, and is a bad night for those whose names sure as heck aren’t welcome. Additionally there are sometimes where it makes good sense to change it just to avoid confusion.

If you have the same IP as someone else on your network this can lead to an “IP address conflict” that is like two people at the same job with the same name. They’re going to get to know each other really well as everybody else confuses them. Your internet service provider’s tech support might need to change your network’s address to trouble shoot your connection as well so it might be a good
idea to know how to do this ahead of time.

To change IP address for Mac, first thing you need to do is find out what your IP is currently. We need to check the name tag. Launch the Apple Menu, select “System Preferences” after click “Network Control Panel” now you should be presented with “TCP/IP”, Check the list of all the connections for you IP address. If you have an iPhone or another service on the network they might show up to. Use the search engine of your choice and ask “What is my IP?”. That will show you what on your list of connected devices is what you need from process of elimination.

Proxy and VPNIf you want to automatically change it you can make a request from your Internet Service Provider or whoever is in charge of your IT. The thing to keep in mind is that with most broadband as opposed to dial up connections, your IP is dynamic and changes every time you connect to your modem. Check to see if it changes. If you have a new IP from doing something as simple as resetting a modem or internet connection then you can count this problem solved.

If you want to do it manually, and you like the hands on approach that can be done to. The “TCP/IP” screen you opened earlier comes in handy again. From the drop down menu the default connection should be “Built-In-Ethernet”. From here click “Configure”. Configure IPV4 and then hit manually. Now you need to get a new IP.

It’s never a good idea to just try and guess a new IP address. This is a bad idea for two reasons. A) It’ll take forever to just guess an appropriate one and B) You don’t know who uses it if you do find one. You also don’t know if someone if awful upset with the owner of that IP you are attempting to use. The best advice would be find a proxy network and using one of theirs. They’re usually free and public to their users. After you’ve found a good one hit “Save”.
